Washington Cell Phone Law Facts

In Washington State they like to keep things simple. So of course there cell phone law would be the most straighforward. Drivers can be cited for breaking the new law only if they have been stopped for another traffic violation. The fine for violating the new law could be as high as $250.

Here are the straight facts on the Washington state cell phone law.

  • As of January 1st, 2008, it is illegal to text message while driving.
  • Beginning July 2008, it will be illegal to drive while chatting on a hand-held cell phone.
  • The law won't apply to emergency personnel, tow truck drivers who use wireless devices that are permanently attached to their vehicles, or drivers using wireless devices to report illegal activity, call for medical assistance or other emergencies.
  • Users of "hands-free" devices are also exempt.
